STEAM Initiative

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math for guiding students in authentic inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.  The Talladega County School System is #leadingtheway in providing programs and curriculum resources to support STEAM at all grade levels.

CODING

Students at every grade level participate in writing computer code. The Talladega County Schools Coding Progression was developed by teacher leaders in our district.  Elementary students utilize a number of coding solutions including Code.org, Scratch Jr., Kodable, BeeBots, and Spheros to engage in computational thinking and Computer Programming practice. Middle and high school students are engaged in more advanced coding opportunities through Code.org, JavaScript, VEX/BEST Robotics, Hummingbird, and Project Lead the Way.  Through coding, students develop the creativity and innovative skills critical for any career.

ROBOTICS

All schools offer opportunities for students to learn basic programming skills through robotics.   The elementary schools offer robotics through clubs, STEAM classes, and afterschool programs. The middle and high schools embed robotics into the daily curriculum and compete with other schools across the state with robots that they build and program.  A multitude of resources are used including Vex Robotics, BEST Robotics, Hummingbird Robotics, and LEGO WeDO/ Mindstorm.

MAKERSPACES

Each of our schools has implemented a STEAM Lab and/or Makerspace.  These areas in the school are equipped with a variety of materials for students to create, invent, learn, and explore.  These spaces include 3D printers, art supplies, Legos, computers, robots, Snap Circuits, etc.  Students use these materials to design, build, and create innovative products.  Many of our schools employ a STEAM Teacher who leads students through rigorous STEAM Challenges to help build critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity skills as well as perseverance and risk-taking.  Through these experiences, students are learning the engineering design process and exploring future career opportunities.
